The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been observed by the church since medieval times. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae. The readings from the Gospel trace the story of Christ’s passion; the music portrays his pathos; and the power of silence and darkness recalls the drama of this momentous day. At the conclusion of the service, the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle anticipates the joy of His ultimate victory. As you prepare for the service, you are encouraged to focus your attention on the cross.
