Services resume on Friday, December 2, 2018
The Congregation at Ocean Reef meets the first Friday of every month:
in the Chapel Annex
at 6:00 p.m.
During the months of December through April.
Jewish members of the Ocean Reef Club are invited to gather for a Sabbath service on the first Friday of the month (from December through April) at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Annex. The service begins with lighting the Sabbath candles and continues with readings, blessings and prayers in both Hebrew and English. Congregants take turns leading the service. A special glow comes from the Everlasting Light (ner tamid) that is set into a wood Star of David (Magen David). The congregation honors a Torah Scroll that sits within a specially constructed stand. The Torah is from eastern Europe and was rescued from desecration and destruction by the Nazis who plundered Jewish synagogues and homes. Allied forces found these treasures at the end of World War II, and many of them are now at rest in synagogues all over the world. The Torah scroll and stand, the silver yad or pointer, Sabbath candlesticks, and the Magen David are all gifts from thoughtful congregants. The Sabbath service concludes with Kiddush, the blessing over wine, and Ha-Motzi, the blessing over challah, the Sabbath bread. An oneg Shabbat, celebration with fellowship, follows. Guests are always welcome.
Chanukah will be celebrated for eight days from December 2 thru December 9 in 2018. Note that in the Jewish calendar a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day.
