Rev. Dr. Tom Tewell Director Macedonian Ministry Atlanta, Georgia

Rev. Dr. Tom Tewell
Director
Macedonian Ministry
Atlanta, Georgia

Dr. Tom Tewell has loved being pastor of four wonderful congregations during his forty years in pastoral ministry, but in this current chapter of his life, he thoroughly enjoys being a pastor to pastors, a consultant to churches...and, most of all, a husband, dad, and granddad to seven grandchildren between the ages of one and twenty! Each of the congregations Tom has served are unique in their own way. The First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a pioneer in the small group movement in America. The Presbyterian Church of New Providence, NJ is characterized by a venture of faith stewardship program in which no one pledges to the church, but the congregation gives in faith, and often oversubscribed its budget. Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas is one of America’s largest churches (over 5000 members) and yet it is one of a very few congregations in the world who gives away one dollar to the needs of the world for every dollar they spend on themselves. And, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian in New York City (3,500 members) is well known for a significant ministry to the homeless during Tom’s tenure. Dr. Tewell was pastor of Fifth Avenue on September 11, 2001 when he and his congregation offered a message of Christian hope to New York.

Known as a dynamic and inspiring preacher, Tom continues to be invited to preach each year in congregations and at conference centers all over America. He teaches preaching seminars in several theological seminaries and he currently teaches and coaches young preachers in the Zick Preaching Scholar Program that he developed and helped to start in 2014.

An entrepreneur at heart, Tom is also Founder of Macedonian Ministry, a leadership development program that he started in 2008, along with Atlanta developer Tom Cousins. Macedonian Ministry currently touches the lives of 600 pastors in 24 different denominations across America and Scotland. MM offers pastors the opportunity to participate in a three-year, peer-learning cohort that helps them discover creative new ideas for ministry.  Tom and his wife Suzanne have been married for almost 50 years and they have two married sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law and seven grand-children, who are the joy of their lives! The Tewell’s live in Claremont, California, close to their three youngest grandchildren!

Fernando Ortega Concert

Fernando Ortega Christian Music Artist

Fernando Ortega
Christian Music Artist

In the early 1990s, young composer and pianist Fernando Ortega, classically trained and musically complex, entered the Christian music scene. His distinctively earthy sound perplexed and even defied the pop status quo. Descended from eight generations of Mexican weavers, this son of the Rio Grande entwined thoughtful melodies with Celtic, bluegrass, classical and Latin American influences to create something unique and rare.

Today, Fernando is one of Christian music’s most respected artists, his works encompassing modern hymns, liturgical songs, and Inspirational and praise & worship favorites. With three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and a Billboard Latin Music Award to his credit, Fernando’s Christian radio hits include “This Good Day,” “Jesus, King of Angels” and “Sleepless Night.” Renowned for his stirring arrangements of beloved hymns— “Give Me Jesus” and “Be Thou My Vision,” among others— his solo discography features 18 projects in a heralded career spanning more than 25 years.

His latest offering, the much-anticipated The Crucifixion of Jesus, follows the same devotional trajectory of 2011’s Come Down O Love Divine, this time centering on the events of Holy Week. Co-produced with Bernard Chadwick in a customized recording space in Fernando’s Albuquerque home, it’s the most intentionally devotional project he’s ever released, a meticulous labor of love. Engineered and mixed by GRAMMY® Award-winner Brandon Bell, the project was an epiphany of sorts for Fernando. “It was about finding my way through the mystery of Holy Week,” he explains, “working my way through the events leading up to Christ’s death, the betrayal, the communion…all of it a meditation.”

Featuring 11 contemplative songs and six readings, the album is a sweeping narrative which carries the   listener from Palm Sunday to the Crucifixion. In stark and stunning compositions like “In My Father’s Kingdom” (the Last Supper), “Stay With Me Here”(Garden of Gethsemane), “Ah Holy Jesus, How Have You Offended” (the betrayal) and others, Fernando paints in unforgettable strokes the heart of the Gospel, the way of sorrow Jesus traveled to redeem the world. “Every aspect of our lives should be measured out by the narrative of Christ’s life,” Fernando says. “Year after year, through the journey of this Holy season, “Christ’s  ministry starts again and again.”

Rev. Craig Aven (Reflections Service)

Craig Aven lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he’s served as a lead worshipper at his church, Grace Chapel for many years. In the spring of 2005, he founded Mercy Street Ministries Foundation, with the desire to bring the good news of Christ through worship and compassion. “Our vision is to create an artistic movement, producing projects that glorify God and generate resources to help those who are in need physically, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Craig has spent time leading worship in the Philippines, Belize and India, and has spent many months leading worship in Mexico with Back2Back Ministries. "It's amazing how after shoveling cement all day and interacting with the kids in the children's homes, hearts are more vulnerable and open to God," he says.

Craig’s ultimate passion is to write and perform songs that encourage, lift up,and move others to experience a life of freedom found only in Jesus.

Craig knows first hand the freedom and joy that comes from following Christ; it is his passion, and it is reflected in the heartfelt lyrics of the songs that pour out from his soul.

WHY I LOVE HOPE

Trygve loves the worship life of Hope College. He is privileged to preach at many other colleges and churches across the country, but is convinced that nothing compares with the worship he experiences weekly at Hope. What makes Hope College unique and special are the students, faculty and staff who come voluntarily, eager and ready to worship the Triune God of Grace from their hearts. There is a rare authentic vibrancy to the worship of Hope students that inspires his own faith and calls forth his very best as a pastor and preacher of the gospel of Christ.  He loves preaching the gospel of hope for Hope, and to do so in the context of worshiping with people he loves.

OUTSIDE THE COLLEGE

Trygve is married to Dr. Kristen Deede Johnson, associate professor of theology and Christian formation at Western Theological Seminary, in Holland, Michigan. Together they have been blessed with a son, Trygve David Johnson, Jr., a daughter, Ella Arlene Johnson, and a Gordon Setter named Whidbey.

Dr. Stowell has a distinguished career in higher education and church leadership. It excites me that God's hand is in it."

Rev. Dr. David Desforge
Presbyterian Church in America

Reverend Dr. David Desforge leads a ministry to international graduate students and scholars connected to the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Lab. He and his team provide friendship and faith building opportunities to these future leaders of the world. David is an ordained pastor with the Presbyterian Church in America and serves with Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship (an interdenominational mission). The vast majority of young adults attending his Bible studies and spiritual discussions identify themselves as atheist or agnostic. David thrives on watching them grapple with and grow in their appreciation for theism and the Gospel.

After first majoring in accounting and later working for a large CPA firm as an auditor, David returned to college to earn a B.A. in interdisciplinary studies (philosophy, history and theology). He then studied at Westminster Theological Seminary and earned his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees.

Upon graduation, David served with various counseling centers and churches. In the early 1990’s, he became fascinated with starting new churches and spent 25 years forming numerous thriving ministries and training young pastors to do the same. He was also a key player in the formation of a classical Christian school and a center for the arts.

Interest in other cultures and countries has been a theme throughout David’s ministry career. He served as a speaker/mentor with Mission To The World and World Harvest Mission for many years, leading seminars in Europe, Mexico, Africa and Asia. He has also been a popular speaker for retreats and conferences in the U.S. and has a wide following for his sermons ( https://soundcloud.com/Desforge/albums ) and blogs. He most recently wrote Learning To Love Like Jesus, a provocative Bible study for international scholars.

David and Maggie have enjoyed their involvement with social service organizations such as hospice, Stephen’s Ministry, urban community development, Habitat for Humanity and others. Now residing in East Tennessee, they have wonderful mountain getaways   with one daughter living in the Smokies and another residing in Oviedo, Spain.
